On the 27th of June 2011, the Department for Education (DfE) launched the national scholarship scheme to support professional development. The scheme which will be administered by the Training and Development Agency (TDA) will give teachers more control over their careers by allowing them to choose professional development programmes and activities to support and strengthen their subject knowledge.

The primary aims of the scholarship scheme are to:
  • Encourage serving teachers to pursue knowledge independently to masters-level and beyond.
  • Make it easier for teachers to access masters-level CPD in their subject area or to access expert seminars.
  • Bring about a culture change to create expectations within the sector about the importance of scholarship throughout a teacher's career and share learning, knowledge and expertise across the school system.
Schools Minister Nick Gibb said:

"Most high-prestige scholarship schemes are characterised by their limted size and competitiveness. They have high status within their respective professions and are highly sought after. This scheme will be no different. Scholarships will be awarded against stringent criteria to teachers who have the potential to make a significant contribution to the country's intellectual heritage through the acquisition of deeper subject knowledge. We believe this will have a positive and sustainable impact on the culture of professional development in schools and children's education".
